Brandon Beack, a para-athlete and member of QASA, chose to challenge the limits of what’s possible, transforming a normal race track into a platform for raising disability awareness and funds for the QuadPara Association of South Africa and the Motorsport Legends Benevolent Fund.
Cape Town, South Africa (20 March 2025) – Now it’s not every day that a man willingly decides to race and attempt to outcompete an Italian luxury sports car in his wheelchair!
Well, that’s exactly what para-athlete Brandon Beack audaciously set out to do when he went head-to-head against a Ferrari 269 GTS at the Killarney International Raceway, in a race supported by Scuderia South Africa.
The race aimed to raise awareness for the QuadPara Association of South Africa (QASA) and the Motorsport Legends Benevolent Fund.
The two organisations are the charitable beneficiaries of The Cape 1000, supported by Private Clients by Old Mutual Wealth. The Cape 1000 is an annual grand touring regularity rally featuring a mix of 65 rare and unique cars, ranging from timeless classics to modern supercars running from 16-21 March.
Speaking on his race against the Ferrari, Beack says it was loads of fun!
“It was such an exhilarating experience to be next to such a fast car on a race track. What made it even more special, was the fact that I was there representing a greater cause in support of QASA.”
Beack, a member of QASA, has represented South Africa in various international competitions. He was paralysed from the shoulders down in 2012 after breaking his neck while training for a gymnastics competition.
Beack’s epic race is an inspiring showcase of how individuals, even after experiencing tragic blows, can still go on to achieve extraordinary feats, inspiring others to push beyond perceived limitations and make a meaningful difference.
Moved by the athlete’s resilience and cause, Vanessa Crichton, organiser of The Cape 1000 says:
“We’ve always believed in supporting worthy causes since the inception of our business. There is a great demand for supporting those in need in South Africa and we realise the importance of doing so through our business.”
