The 11-year-old Durbanville learner clocks a blistering 9.84 seconds to become South Africa’s fastest under-11 over 80 metres.

South Africa (18 December 2025) – Mindset, preparation and belief played an important role when Dylan Calvert, Grade 5 learner from Meridian Pinehurst Primary School etched his name into South African athletics history.

Competing at the ASA Sub-Youth National Athletics Championships, where we saw incredible achievements from the Central Gauteng Athletics, Dylan was also among those who deserved recognition.

He delivered a blistering performance in the under-11 80m sprint, stopping the clock at 9.84 seconds. The time shattered a national record that had stood untouched for 18 years, earning him the gold medal and officially crowning him the fastest under-11 athlete in the country over the distance. Speaking after his record-breaking run, Dylan highlighted the importance of mental preparation, explaining that staying positive and focused was key to his performance. He emphasised the value of daily discipline, proper preparation and trusting the process.

Hailing from Kraaifontein, Dylan’s rise has been anything but accidental. Over the past two seasons, he has consistently stood out on the track, showing maturity beyond his years. In 2024, he dominated his age group, claiming both the 80m and 100m titles, signalling early on that he was a talent to watch.

Coaches describe him as dedicated, humble and fiercely competitive, a rare combination that continues to set him apart from his peers.

The young sprinter says he is proud of the milestone but already has his eyes set on what comes next. His immediate goal is to continue lowering his times as he prepares for upcoming provincial and national competitions.

At just 11 years old, Dylan Calvert’s journey is still in its early stages.
