A lively handover at Carousel Casino saw Limpopo pass the iconic Flame of Hope to North West, kicking off the countdown to the 2026 Special Olympics.

South Africa (04 December 2025) – If there is one symbol that captures the soul of the Special Olympics movement, it’s the Flame of Hope. It’s more than just a torch; it represents courage, possibility and the belief that every person has value, purpose, and a place to shine.

The Flame of Hope has officially arrived in the North West Province, and it made its entrance in true Special Olympics South Africa style. Which is full of spirit and unity.

The celebration kicked off with the big moment. Limpopo Province handed over the iconic Flame to the North West, marking the start of the build-up to the 2026 Special Olympics South Africa National Summer Games.

And who better to protect such a symbol than the global heroes of the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR)? SAPS leadership from both provinces stepped forward to reaffirm their role as guardians of the Flame, showcasing their ongoing commitment to inclusion. This carries the message that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities deserve dignity, visibility, and respect.

As the Flame was placed in North West’s hands, provincial leaders showed that they are ready. Ready to welcome athletes and to host communities.

The Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities joined the celebration, adding their voice to a growing movement of advocates pushing for accessibility, respect, and opportunity.

The Flame of Hope now begins a journey that will wind through communities, schools, and local landmarks. Everywhere it stops, it will carry the same message of unity, inclusion, and a reminder that every athlete deserves a chance to shine.

The Flame is lit, the energy is high, and 2026 is officially on the horizon.
