From Comrades victories to the Cape Town Marathon, Gerda Steyn shows that running is about sharing joy,  inspiring others, and embracing every step with a smile.

Johannesburg, South Africa (12 September 2025) – Gerda Steyn isn’t just a runner, but a beacon of positivity, a woman whose ever-present smile has earned her the affectionate nicknames such as “Sunshine Lady” or “Smiling Assassin”. It’s a title she carries with pride, even after conquering gruelling ultramarathons.

Since winning the Comrades Marathon this year, Gerda says the celebrations feel endless.

“When I see other runners and their faces light up and they would just sometimes run past me in the street and shout congratulations and not even say what for. It’s actually really sweet and special,” she shared.

For Gerda, these moments are reminders that her achievements are bigger than herself. They are part of a shared experience, inspiring everyone who crosses paths with her.

Running was not always in her plans. At school, she never stood out as a star athlete, and competitive running was far from her mind.

“It only came about later in my life, and it was a surprise to me and everyone around me.”

That unexpected path has now led her to four Comrades Marathon victories and six Two Oceans Marathon titles.

Gerda’s trademark smile is not just for show. She thinks of it as a gesture of appreciation, a connection with spectators holding posters and cheering her name.

“When you’re running at pace, you can’t really speak about what you’re going through. But I can smile, and it can say much more than words.”

Even past the 80-kilometre mark of a race, when fatigue is overwhelming, she finds strength in that smile, knowing it spreads encouragement and joy.

Looking ahead, Gerda is turning her focus to the Cape Town Marathon on October 19. She is excited to compete on home soil once again and aims to reclaim the South African marathon record she held before Glenrose Xaba set a new mark last year. Her training includes using the Hollywoodbet Joburg 10 km race as preparation.

Through every race and early morning training sessions, Gerda Steyn embodies a lifestyle that values joy, no matter how far the road stretches.
