In one part of the world, over 160 SA gymnasts have united for the most inclusive showcase of the sport while in another, a lone-South African made her continent proud:
Global (31 July, 2023) — In one part of the world right now, over 160 South African gymnasts of all ages have united to perform in the world’s most inclusive gymnastics event. In another, a single gymnast represented the African continent as part of the World University Games. While the two might seem to be polar opposite events, both share a love for the sport and South Africa; making enthusiasts beam from Amsterdam to Chengdu.
The World Gymnaestra (held every four years) is currently underway where almost 20 000 gymnasts from all over the world are taking part. It’s one of those rare events where competition comes second to a bigger goal: inclusivity. Here, all ages, backgrounds and cultures join forces to light up Amsterdam’s arenas (which are reportedly fully packed, we might add).
Team South Africa has 165 participants representing 6 provinces per Manager Marti Heri.

Meanwhile in China’s Chengdu, a South African stood bravely on her own. Azra Dewan competed in the World University Games’ Rhythmic Gymnastics Final, representing not just South Africa, but the entire African continent in this competition. Here, she earned her highest score in this Olympic Cycle, as over 160 South African gymnasts
Azra has previously competed in the Youth Olympic Games (2018), the 2018 and 2020 African Championships and the World Championships (2019).
Despite competing lone-African, community support helped get Azra to the big leagues— the 17th African Championships and the World University Games.
