Chess Dream

Not too long ago, 12-year-old chess prodigy Imkhitha Joya’s journey to the World Cadets Championships in Egypt seemed a distant reality. Then, it disappeared altogether after a big disappointment. But, when one person encouraged another leap of faith in her chess dream, something incredible happened:

Egypt (16 October 2023) — Just a few hours ago, Imkhitha Joya touched down in Cairo, landing moments away from her chess dream —representing South Africa at the World Cadets Championships.

Today, she began competing in Sharm El Sheik, got to offer her Russian opponent a gift from home, and settled into a reality that just a few weeks ago seemed reserved for slumber, and at one stage, not even an option.

However, thanks to a hopeful heart, her mother and coach were inspired to give Imkitha’s chess dream a second chance, and boy did it pay off!

The 12-year-old chess prodigy’s first try at her World Cadets Champs crowdfund had not gone according to plan, following another setback in securing funding for the African Youth tournament. It was heartbreak all around for Imkhitha, her coach Thando Hlakula and her mom, as well as her club, Crossroads Chess Club.

But, one person sparked Imkitha’s support system to do something foreign to chess’s mindset—take a leap of faith. With BackaBuddy’s Zane Groenewald encouraging them, they gave the campaign another go.

And, the second time was the charm.

With a wealth of support from all over South Africa, the 12-year-old rising chess star (who is the top-ranked player in the Western Cape and second-ranked player in all of South Africa) was able to take her talent to the world.

“It’s a moment we’ve all been waiting for, a dream that’s finally taking flight,” shared Crossroads Chess Club.

They also thanked Zane personally for his belief in Imkhitha, before extending gratitude to everyone who made moves both big and small to checkmate this chess dream.

“We would also like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Zane Groenewad, a true hero among us.”

“And to every single one of you who stepped forward with your contributions, no matter how big or small, you’ve played an indispensable role in making this young girl’s dream of competing on the international stage come true. It’s your unwavering support and belief in Imkhitha that have made this remarkable journey possible.”
