For her very first full marathon, former Matie Jo-Maree Alcock is tackling the 42.2 km challenge not just for a personal milestone, but to ensure disadvantaged SA students can pursue their studies at Stellenbosch University free from financial worries.

Amsterdam, South Africa (09 October 2025) – Jo-Maree Alcock may have taken up house in the Netherlands, but South Africa will always be home. This October, she will be running her very first full marathon in Amsterdam to support the education of disadvantaged SA students.

A proud Stellenbosch University alumnus, Jo-Maree has always enjoyed running as a physical activity that brings together all the things she values: health, being outdoors, community, and a sense of purpose. This time around, she’s decided to push herself even further, with others in mind.

“This year, I want to make my marathon about more than just the 42.2 km. I’m dedicating it to raising funds for a cause that matters deeply to me: the EU-UK Bursary Fund at Stellenbosch University, my alma mater,” Jo-Maree shares.

“This bursary helps students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds in South Africa who dream of studying at Stellenbosch but face financial obstacles.”

This bursary fund is designed to support students from disadvantaged backgrounds in South Africa, helping them pursue their studies at Stellenbosch University (SU) without financial barriers. The fund encourages alumni and friends of SU living outside South Africa to contribute through opportunities to support educational advancement and meaningful projects at the university.

As a charity registered with the Charities Commission, it operates under the guidance of a dedicated team of trustees.

“By supporting this fund, we can open doors for future Maties – giving them the chance to grow, learn, and be part of a vibrant, world-class university community in South Africa,” she adds.

With SU rallying behind her, Jo-Maree is putting in the work as she trains hard to help offer the gateway to success for future generations of Maties.
