Johann and Julia are turning heads with not just their perfect ice skating skills, but with their determination after meeting online.
South Africa (12 August 2025) – Pair skating is a bit like a dance and a trust fall. Johann and Julia are proving that the perfect duo can come from anywhere, even thousands of miles apart and still make magic on the floor.
Their partnership began during the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic through a search tool designed specifically for ice skaters looking to get paired up. This turned into a real opportunity after Julia travelled to South Africa for a tryout.
“Once Julia came to South Africa, it was a great match straight away,” they say. “We decided to team up and compete as soon as we could.”
Since officially joining forces in September 2021, their journey has not always been smooth. Training with limited resources, inconsistent ice conditions, and few pair skating options locally made progress tough. Yet they persevered.
Their dedication eventually led them to IceLab in Italy, a hub known for world-class coaching, consistent year-round training, and a highly competitive environment surrounded by top pair teams.
“Simplicity and consistency,” they say, “Everything we need is in one place.”
Their training days are intense, starting early and stretching into the afternoon with two ice sessions, warm-ups, lifts, ballet, stretching, and gym workouts. All of it is paying off. Over the past season, they have nailed the Double Axel ( a jump involving 2.5 rotations in the air) in competition.
Though missing out on the Four Continents qualification was a tough pill to swallow, they remain focused.
“We’re basically right there,” they say. “We just put our heads down and kept working. Next season, we want to close that gap and push for Worlds.”
Their goals include debuting two new programs this year. A striking short program and a long program featuring Elvis Presley’s hits.
“We’re also working on adding a triple flip throw and a triple twist,” they share. “Technically and artistically, we’re always looking to add more.”
The pair has different abilities that make up this team.
Johann says, “Julia brings flexibility, beauty, and attention to detail.” Julia responds, “Johann brings strength, power, and he has an incredible ear for music. He even cuts our programs.”
Off the ice, they prioritise balance, enjoying weekends outdoors, cooking, and baking to recharge. Staying connected with family and friends back home keeps their motivation strong.
“We video call often and keep focused on our goals. It helps us stay motivated and celebrate the small victories,” Jules says.
To young South African skaters and pair teams dreaming big, their advice is clear,
“Don’t ever doubt what’s possible. We’re proof that if you really want something, no matter the obstacles or the distance, you can find a way.”
