The Junior Springboks just reminded the world why South African rugby is a force to be reckoned with, clinching the U20 World Championship in a thrilling showdown against New Zealand.

Rovigo, Italy (20 July 2025) – South Africa’s rugby trophy cabinet just got a little fuller. And it’s thanks to a bunch of rising stars who proved that grit, discipline and heart can take you all the way.

The Junior Springboks have officially broken a 13-year drought, beating New Zealand 23-15 in the World Rugby U20 Championship Final in Rovigo, Italy. And just like that, South Africa now boasts three rugby teams wearing the world champion crown…the Springboks, the Blitzboks and now the Junior Boks.

It was a hot and humid evening in Italy but the pressure didn’t get to the SA U20s. They kept their heads, stuck to their plan and brought that fighting South African spirit to the field.

The young side stepped onto the field with purpose, knowing the weight of history and the pride of a nation was on their shoulders. And within minutes, they made their intent crystal clear. Flanker Xola Nyali powered over the line for the opening try, and Vusi Moyo, with his calm, consistent boot, nailed the conversion. 7-0. Dream start. New Zealand came with fire, as they always do, and clawed their way back with a try from Jayden Sa. But it never felt like the Junior Boks lost control. Moyo slotted a penalty to stretch the lead, and when New Zealand’s Sika Pole saw red for a high tackle, South Africa turned up the heat.

Injuries, yellow cards, disallowed tries… the final had it all. But through every twist and turn, the Junior Boks never looked rattled. They just kept building. Moyo kept the scoreboard ticking, calmly adding points whenever they were on offer.

Then came the magic moment.

Three minutes from full time, Haashim Pead chipped a perfect kick into the corner and Gilermo Mentoe gathered it beautifully and scored. At 23-8, the game was done. New Zealand managed a consolation try in the dying seconds but the outcome was never in doubt.

It was history repeating itself, just like in 2012, when South Africa last won the U20 title by beating New Zealand in a final. And just like then, this group of young men captured the imagination of a nation.

With a final score of 23-15, the Junior Springboks lifted the trophy and the country’s hopes for the future of the game. They reminded us that our pipeline is packed with talent, determination and that special something that makes South African rugby unique.

And if this is what the future looks like, we’re in for something very special.
