At just 14, Kamogelo Maruma has earned the chance to compete at the Commonwealth Chess Championship, following a string of impressive national achievements.

Cape Town, South Africa (08 October 2025) – Like a true grandmaster in the making, Kamogelo Maruma knows that every move counts, especially on the chessboard. At just 14 years old, this young strategist has already made all the right moves, carving a path from school and provincial tournaments to the national stage.

Now, Kamogelo is preparing for the next big play of his chess journey: representing South Africa at the 2025 Commonwealth Chess Championship in Malaysia. It’s a dream opportunity. One that will see him compete against some of the world’s brightest young minds.

Kamogelo’s chess journey began at Bastion Primary, where coach Mr. Theron recognised his strategic talent. Chess quickly became his passion, and despite a pause in 2020, he returned stronger, earning Western Province colours and winning the District East Metro Championship to claim his Western Cape colours. By 2025, he ranked 10th nationally in the U14 category and took 1st in his age group at the District East Tournament, establishing himself as one of South Africa’s brightest young chess talents.

Chess has been more than a hobby for Kamogelo since he first picked up the game at seven years old. It has shaped the way he thinks and plans.

“Chess taught me patience, focus, and to always think three steps ahead. Playing at the Commonwealth Championship will be a dream come true.”

The Commonwealth Chess Championship 2025 in Malaysia (8–17 November) will feature players across multiple age groups, including Open, Junior, and Youth divisions. Kamogelo earned his official spot through his strong performance in national events, where only the top performers in the National Chess Championships, Junior Nationals, and Youth Round Robin were recognised, with standby players named for Junior and Youth categories.

To make this journey a reality, Kamogelo needs support to cover the costs involved in travelling and competing overseas. Expenses include return flights to Malaysia, accommodation for 10–12 nights, meals, tournament registration, travel insurance, visa fees, and the official team kit. Every contribution goes directly toward these essentials.

A BackaBuddy page has been set up to make it easy for supporters to contribute.

Every donation brings Kamogelo closer to the competition where he can make his mark and return with experience and new ideas to share.
