Maseru, Lesotho (12 March 2022) – KickfLife – a football club dedicated to social change – has just been nominated for a Laureus World Sports Award!

At the inaugural Laureus World Sport Awards, founding patron Nelson Mandela said: “Sport has the power to change the world.” The Nominees for the 23rd annual Laureus World Sport Awards announced recently include some of the greatest athletes on the planet.

But the Laureus World Sports Awards honour not only elite achievement on the field of play, but life-changing endeavours away from it, and every year the Laureus Sport For Good Award is given to a programme that brings young people together and provides at-risk communities with better choices.

The 2022 Awards shortlist for the Laureus Sport For Good Award includes a project run in Lesotho.

Kick4Life uses football to address social issues such as gender inequality and drug use, and educates the youth about HIV and AIDS, promoting testing. Over 250,000 young people have participated in the project so far.

The environment created by the programme enables these youngsters to talk about their problems in a safe space and receive the counselling and advice they need to deal with the challenges they face.

Steve Fleming, Co-founder of Kick4Life, said: “The support of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation has enabled us to challenge gender discrimination, to promote healthy communities and to support vulnerable young people in Lesotho towards achieving sustainable livelihoods. Our brilliant team of staff and volunteers work tirelessly to ensure that every young person in our programmes has the opportunity to achieve their potential, and we are thrilled that Kick4Life’s life-changing work is being recognised as a shortlisted project.”

From the world’s elite athletes, whose record-breaking achievements are broadcast around the globe, to children and young people for whom sport provides a way to improve life in one of its forgotten corners, the Laureus World Sports Awards is a celebration of all that sport can give us.
