After 5 days of racing in the Netherlands, South Africa’s junior champ Matthew Hörter powers to second place overall at the Tour of Assen.

Holland, Netherlands (05 August 2025) – South Africa’s junior road cycling sensation, Matthew Hörter, has just turned heads on the international stage. The current South African Junior Road Race Champion delivered a sizzling performance at the Junior Tour of Assen in the Netherlands, clinching second place overall on General Classification (GC) and a third-place finish in the Points Classification.  Not too shabby for a teenager taking on the world’s best!

Racing with Team Fossa, Matthew was in top form across all five stages of the week-long tour, consistently placing in the top 10. From the very first stage, it was clear that the South African was there to race and to win.

His stage results speak for themselves:

  • Stage 1: 4th
  • Stage 2: 6th
  • Stage 3: 2nd
  • Stage 4: 3rd
  • Stage 5: 4th

That kind of consistency is rare in junior cycling and even rarer when you are battling across unfamiliar routes, plus against Europe’s finest. Matthew stayed cool, calm, and calculated throughout, showing the kind of race smarts you would expect from a seasoned pro.

By the end of the tour, he had lost out on the top step of the podium by just seven seconds. That is less than the time it takes to zip up one’s jersey. But for Matthew, it was still a massive achievement.

What makes it even more special is that it’s always great to see South African talent flying the flag high in Europe. While fellow South African rider Daniel from Team On Track SA also showed great form, a time penalty on Stage 3 unfortunately affected his GC standing.

This performance cements his status as one of South Africa’s brightest young talents. It also sends a clear message: Matthew Hörter is coming in hot, and the world better take notice.
