Call it a comeback, a redemption, or simply magic, the Proteas have finally done it! South Africa are the new World Test Champions.
United Kingdom (15 June 2025) – Well, this is one for the history books, and for the braai chats, the group texts, the victory playlists and that random uncle who still has a VHS of the ’98 Champions Trophy.
The Proteas have won the ICC World Test Championship Final… beating Australia at Lord’s and lifting the mace for the very first time!
Let that sink in. We’ve only gone and done it!
On a chilly but electric 14th of June 2025, the boys in green and gold made magic on the most iconic cricket ground in the world. And somewhere between Aiden Markram’s century and Kagiso Rabada’s fireballs, a nation’s dreams came true.
“This one’s for all of us.” Temba Bavuma, calm, proud, humble as ever, summed it up best. “We’ve been etched in history. We’re part of something that’s never been done before… and it feels amazing.”
This isn’t just about cricket. It’s about hope. It’s about resilience. It’s about finally, finally, shaking off the old narrative and writing a brand-new one.
“We hope this is the start of something,” Bavuma continued, “and we hope it inspires every South African out there.”
And honestly? It already has.
From the packed stands at Lord’s to back gardens in Durban, township taverns in Soweto to tiny schools in Upington, South Africans were united. Flags were flying. Horns were honking. People were hugging strangers and singing like we’d just won the Lotto and the Rugby World Cup on the same day.
Kyle Verreynne, who drove the winning run, said it beautifully, “What it means to people in our country… it’s really special.”
Even the usually composed Bavuma let a smile crack wide open as he declared, “Let’s forget our issues for a moment and rejoice. Be one. Just for today.”
Yes, captain. Challenge accepted.
But this isn’t just about the runs, wickets, catches or stats. This is about belief. About a team that refused to be defined by past heartbreaks. About rewriting history in real time. For the first time in 27 years, the Proteas have brought a major ICC trophy home. And they did it with style, with heart and with humility.
It’s not just a win. It’s a feeling. One we’re going to hold onto for a very long time.
So today, and for many more days to come, we celebrate.
Because this is the stuff that dreams are made of.
Because good things really do happen.
And because… South Africa, we are officially world champions.
