Shau Mafuna is living his dream at last after accepting a position with Mercedes AMG High-Performance Powertrains in the F1 division.

South Africa (10 January 2022) – South African-born Shau Mafuna is making headlines after joining Mercedes as an engineer and playing a role in Lewis Hamilton’s F1 team. He is joining an incredible F1 team, which will catapult his career!

Shau is a mechanical engineer who has worked hard to get where he is today. He started out as a karting racer and went on to study to become a mechanical engineer. Through this, he joined the Work Experience Academy (WEA) programme as a Product Engineer. The opportunity opened quite a few doors, and that was how he managed to interview for his dream job.

“I would like to say a massive thanks to all those who’ve helped me achieve this dream… It hasn’t been easy, but would it be a dream if it were?” – Shau Mafuna

While Shau won’t be working directly on the car that Lewis will drive in this upcoming season, he is part of the team that supplies power units to the four F1 teams. He accepted the position as a Mechanical Engineer at the Mercedes AMG High-Performance Powertrains two months ago, in November 2021.

Lewis Hamilton has been advocating for more diversity in the sport, and it is finally happening. Hamilton has worked directly with Mercedes to achieve greater racial, gender, and ethnic diversity within the Mercedes F1 family.
