Akani Simbine and Henricho Bruintjies took two consecutive places during the men’s 100m final bringing home gold and silver medals for South Africa.

 

Akani Simbine has left South Africans in fits of joy as he raced to a Commonwealth gold. He led a South African one-two in the 100m final at Australia’s Gold Coast earlier today.

Akani got a time of 10.03 seconds and Henricho Bruintjies got the silver with a time of 10.17. Akani was quick off the block and maintained a brilliant distance which earned him the gold while Henricho picked up his pace right at the last minute and secured his silver position.

South Africa has earned a staggering 9 medals in one day, making the 5th day of the Commonwealth Games, the most exciting one yet! Starting out this morning, SA was ranked 9th and now we are sitting pretty at 5th on the leaderboard. South Africa now has 18 medals plus they have broken a number of records. Yes Man! We flippen love South Africa!

Wayde van Niekerk went wild as Akani and Henricho crossed the finish line. His wife Chesney shared his reaction on Twitter and we just can’t get enough.

Congratulations even came from world star, Usain Bolt, whose fellow countryman, Yohan Blake, lost out on the gold and earned himself the bronze.
