The SA Kimura Shukokai karate team brought home 40 medals from the KS International World Championships in Sweden, making it the 4th successful year in a row.
South Africa (25 July 2018) – Facing 20 different countries, South Africa has been led to victory for the 4th time since 2012 thanks to the Kimura Shukokai karate team. South Africa has won the biennial (every two years) championship every year since 2012, making their 2018 victory, the 4th consecutive win.
“We were anticipating doing reasonably well but the standard was extremely high. South Africa has done exceptionally well and it’s a credit to all the teachers and all the support. The students came ahead to a wonderful degree; we have amazing sponsors.” – Shihan Chris Thompson
The KS International World Championships was hosted in Sweden and is considered one of the biggest karate championships in the world. The South African Kimura Shukokai team brought home a total of 40 medals.
The championship and various global teams were inspired by Sensei Shigeru Kimura. He began his training with Sensei Tani in 1957 at age sixteen in Japan. A few years later he left Japan and moved to various countries in Africa before settling in South Africa. Kimura Shukokai International (KSI), was formed in 1995, after the untimely death of Soke Shigeru Kimura 10th Dan.
Under the guidance of his four most senior students, the KSI governing body was formed and the global championship was instated. KSI is one of the biggest single style organisations around the world today.
