Led by Paralympic legend Tadgh Slattery, seven South African swimmers will test their limits in Swakopmund, marking a proud return to the competition.
Windhoek, Namibia (26 September 2025) – South Africa’s next generation of Para swimming stars is making waves beyond the border this week as Team SASAPD competes at the Bank Windhoek NASFED Short Course Nationals, held at The Cube Aquatics Centre in Swakopmund from 24–28 September.
This marks a special moment for the team, not just because of the fierce competition ahead, but because it marks SASAPD’s long-awaited return to the international stage. The last time a national team took part abroad was back in Sydney in 1999 and Sheffield in 2008.
Guided by Paralympic legend and now turned coach Tadgh Slattery, the squad is packed with energy, talent, and heart. Leading the charge for South Africa is William le Roux, known for being fast and fearless in the lanes, alongside Gabriel Michael, who is chasing records with every stroke. Adding power to the team is Melisca Everson, while Elnye Potgieter proves that dynamite truly comes in small packages. Showing determination is Thokozane Gininida, matched by the speed and focus of James Willers, whose warm smile is as memorable as his racing. Rounding out the team is Tiaan Terblanche, with sharp vision always set firmly on the finish line
For Slattery, the trip is more than just about medals; it’s about building a pathway for South Africa’s Para swimmers.
“Yes, this is our first international competition in a long time. The SASAPD swimming team last went to Sydney, Australia in 1999, and to Sheffield, UK in 2008. I am so happy that SASAPD and Anton (National SASAPD Swimming Convenor) have decided to send the SASAPD swimming team to Namibia in 2025. Thank you to SASAPD and Anton without you, we would never be able to compete in international swimming competitions.”
This is a historic comeback and a glimpse into the future of Para swimming in South Africa. With every dive, these athletes are proving that they are ready to shine on the international platforms.
