Sheryl James storms to bronze in the 400m T37, delivering South Africa’s first medal at the 2025 World Para Athletics Championships, as teammates shine with record-breaking.
New Delhi, India (02 October 2025) – Team South Africa has made its mark at the 2025 World Para Athletics Championships in New Delhi, with Sheryl James storming to a bronze medal in the Women’s 400m T37. Her powerful run not only earned her a spot on the podium but also secured South Africa’s very first medal of the competition. A proud moment that set the tone for the week.
Sheryl crossed the line behind Ukraine’s Nataliia Kobzar, who claimed gold, and Viktoriia Slanova, who took silver, capping off a gutsy performance that had the South African flag flying high on the world stage.
It was a strong showing all around for the team. Liezel Gouws clocked a season’s best in the same race, finishing in 5th place and proving her consistency at the highest level. Meanwhile, Puseletso Mabote was on fire in the Men’s Long Jump T63 final, leaping to a new African record of 7.01m. His jump not only secured 4th place in a highly competitive field but also marked a personal best. A sign of even bigger things to come.
Team SA’s athletes are showing the world what determination and talent look like. South Africa’s campaign in New Delhi has only just begun, and the momentum is already building.
