Team South Africa sets a new standard, becoming the first African nation to break into the Top 10 at the 2025 FISU Games.

Berlin, Germany (22 July 2025) – South Africa has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by becoming the first African nation to break into the Top 10 of the medal standings at the 2025 FISU World University Games, a historic feat for the country and the continent. From explosive sprints to swimming strokes, South African athletes have made a statement to show the world that African talent belongs at the top of global sport.

The Games, hosted in Berlin, Germany, have been a celebration of excellence, and Team South Africa has played a starring role.

Leading the charge is swimmer Pieter Coetze, who carved his name into the record books with a sensational gold medal in the 100m backstroke, the first medal not just for South Africa, but for Africa at these Games. His achievement was made even more special by the fact that he broke the Games record twice, first in the heats and then again in the final.

Coetze was not done. He followed up with a silver medal in the 100m freestyle, and then clinched another gold in the 50m backstroke with a powerful swim that clocked in at 24.49 seconds.

Lara van Niekerk added to the medal tally with a strong silver in the women’s 50m breaststroke, while the mixed 100m freestyle relay team of Guy Brookes, Ruard van Renen, Olivia Nel, and Michaela de Villiers delivered a bronze performance that shone with golden effort.

This incredible medal haul signals more than just individual triumphs but a powerful moment for African sport. South Africa’s performance in Berlin has not only elevated its status on the international stage but has also raised the flag for the entire continent.

With many more athletes still set to compete in their respective sporting codes and with momentum on their side, Team South Africa is proving that this is only the beginning. You can keep up with all their winning moments here.
