Commonwealth Games

The Gymnastics South Africa team have left for the Commonwealth Games, where they will be flying the flag high and hope to bring home some medals.

 

South Africa (25 July 2022) – Athletics season is in full swing now, with all major sporting events starting to take place in the Northern Hemisphere. Next on the schedule is the Commonwealth Games 2022.

The games take place in Birmingham this year. Several South African teams will be at the games, competing in events to earn medals to bring home to South Africa.

The Commonwealth Games were founded in the 1930s and have been a benchmark for athletes wanting to compete on an international stage. The games are held every four years, and 11 countries are invited to compete. The opening ceremony takes place on the 28th of July 2022, and the games will run until the 8th of August 2022.

Gymnastics South Africa will be at the games. Having just come off the back of a successful championship at the  16th African Artistic Championship in Egypt. The team brought home over 16 medals. The gymnastics team includes:

Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG)

  • Caitlin Rooskrantz
  • Naveen Daries
  • Mammule Rankoe
  • Shante Koti
  • Garcell Napier
  • Coaches: Ilse Pelser and Leeland Christian

Men’s Artistic Gymnastics (MAG)

  • Muhammad Khaalid Mia
  • Coach: Kevin Basson

Rhythmic Gymnastics (RG)

  • Kayla Rondi
  • Coach: Aimee Van Rooyen

We cannot wait to see how the team does at this event.
