The Springboks dominated Scotland 18-3 in a commanding Rugby World Cup opener, showcasing their strength and determination.

Paris, France (11 September 2023) – In a scintillating display of rugby prowess, the South African Springboks kicked off their Rugby World Cup campaign with a resounding 18-3 victory over Scotland.

The win not only showcased the Boks’ incredible form heading into the tournament but also relieved much of the qualification pressure in what was dubbed the “Pool of Death.”

The highly anticipated match played in front of a raucous crowd of 63,556 fans in the sweltering heat of Marseille, saw the Springboks thwart the famed Scottish running game with their characteristic resilience in defence and a dash of ambition in attack.

The first half of the game was marked by intense tussles and relentless pressure from the Springboks. Despite their dominance, they could only convert their efforts into two penalty goals from the boot of the talented Manie Libbok. The Scottish defence held firm and a crucial penalty goal from Finn Russell on the stroke of halftime kept them within striking distance. The turning point came early in the second half, with the Springboks taking complete control of the game. Two tries in the opening ten minutes of the second half, courtesy of Pieter-Steph du Toit and the prolific Kurt-Lee Arendse sealed the deal for the Composed Boks.

Du Toit’s try was a testament to his relentless work rate as he looped around the attacking scrum to crash through the Scottish defence. Arendse, with his remarkable speed, capitalized on a turnover and a pinpoint kick pass from Libbok to bag his 12th try in just 11 Tests.

Faf de Klerk, taking over the kicking duties, added the cherry on top with a touchline conversion. Although he missed a subsequent penalty attempt, the Springboks had opened up a commanding 15-point lead, leaving Scotland with a mountain to climb.
