Nine tries. A stadium full of roaring fans. And a group of Springboks who reminded the world exactly why they wear the number one ranking with pride.

Nelspruit South Africa (20 July 2025) – It was fast, it was fierce and it was oh-so-very South African.

The Springboks wrapped up their midyear Test series in spectacular fashion at Mbombela Stadium this past Saturday, delivering a performance that wasn’t just a win, it was a celebration of rugby, of teamwork, of South African flair. With nine tries and a 55-10 final score, the Boks gave 36,842 fans a match to remember.

Georgia may be ranked 11th in the world, but they came out swinging. Within the first three minutes, they were already on the scoreboard, capitalising on an early Springbok error to drive over for a try. For a brief moment, it looked like we were in for a nail-biter. Siya Kolisi was even forced off the pitch for an HIA and the visitors held a 7-0 lead.

But then, South Africa did what we do best… we regrouped, we refocused and we roared back.

Debutant Boan Venter brought the crowd to its feet with his first try in the green and gold, charging over the line like a man on a mission. Just minutes later, another new cap, Marnus van der Merwe, a Nelspruit local, gave the home fans even more reason to cheer with a beautifully executed maul try. It was clear: this wasn’t going to be Georgia’s fairy tale.

By halftime, the Springboks were up 22-10. But the second half was something else entirely.

Enter the bomb squad. Enter fireworks.

Edwill van der Merwe lit up the scoreboard with two well-earned tries, showing the kind of speed and confidence that makes him a true fan favourite. Damian Willemse added his name to the tally, followed by a slick finish from Kurt-Lee Arendse, and finally, the always-composed Handré Pollard dotted down after a breathtaking run that started deep in our own half.

And let’s talk about Pollard for a moment. Four conversions on the night took his Test points tally to a staggering 797. Cool, calm, clinical.

But it wasn’t just about the scoreboard. This game had heart.

Georgia didn’t roll over. They kept pressing. They created space. They pushed the Boks hard in patches. And that respect didn’t go unnoticed.

“They gave it all and more to the Boks in the second half,” noted one commentator, pointing out just how much grit the Georgians brought to the field.

Ruan Nortje, deservedly named Player of the Match, summed it up in his performance: tough, committed, relentless.

The final whistle blew with the Boks on 55, Georgia on 10, and the Lowveld air thick with pride. It wasn’t just a win. It was a moment. A moment of new caps shining. Of returning stars delivering. Of fans screaming themselves hoarse. Of South Africans, once again, remembering why rugby runs in our veins.
