Representing the nation with pride and passion, South Africa kicks off the Lawn Bowls World Cup in Malaysia.
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (05 November 2025) – When it comes to sports you might not immediately think of, lawn bowls can be one of them, but for South Africa’s Fairtree Proteas, the 2025 Lawn Bowls World Cup in Kuala Lumpur is the stage to show just how competitive and passionate this sport can be.
Dressed in their new kit, the Proteas walked proudly during the Opening Ceremony at the Bukit Kiara National Lawn Bowl Centre, representing the green and gold with pride, purpose and a whole lot of heart. Every draw, drive and clutch shot this week will carry not just points, but the spirit of a nation.
Team South Africa, featuring Anneke Scheepers, Bridget Herselman, Jason Evans, Wayne Roberts, Jarid James and Margie Palmer, with coaches Johann du Plessis, Denise Field and Susan Nel, are taking on some of the best players in the world. While the bowls may be small, the skill and dedication of the team are anything but.
The energy, or Gees, that South Africans are known for was evident from the moment the competition began. The players bring a mix of fighting spirit, unity, and warmth, making their presence felt both on and off the greens. Every game is a display of precision, teamwork and sheer determination.
A few of the team members, Anneke Scheepers, Jason Evans and Jarid James shared their excitement ahead of the competition.
Anneke expressed her excitement, saying she was really looking forward to it.
“We’ve been practicing on the greens and we’re looking forward to the competition and yeah the greens were good so we’re looking forward to it.”
Jason shared his thoughts on the facilities.
“The indoor facility just across from where we are here now is absolutely superb.”
Jared also shared his enthusiasm for the challenge ahead.
“Super stoked and I’m looking forward to the extreme competition.”
The inclusion of lawn bowls in such high-profile events, including the discussion around the Paralympics and future Olympic bids, marks a huge step for the sport and for South African athletes.
“It’s a big step in the future and it’s going to be an awesome thing to see Paralympics get involved in the Olympic era.”
