Team South Africa has already done a sterling job at the African Games taking place in Accra—and we’re just getting started with 29 medals and counting!
Accra, Ghana (11 March 2024) — The African Games in Accra have only just begun. Yet, Team South Africa is already making space in their suitcases for all the medals they’ll be bringing home.
Starting off on 8 March, athletes from a score of disciplines united in green and gold trakkies, ready to dress up their fits with gold, silver and bronze.
True to many athletes’ promises to make Mzansi proud, squads and individuals have already succeeded in doing exactly that with many victory moments—29 victory moments to be exact, because that’s how many medals (and counting) our representatives have earned!
This also meant that we are the second most successful team in the African Games thus far with Egypt in the running.
From cycling to swimming, South Africa basked in podium prestige, taking 13 medals on Saturday and 16 on Sunday.
In the case of the golden gooses, Hayley Preen and Dillon Geary (road cycling), Caitlin de Lange, Clayton Jimmie, Catherine Van Rensburg, Simone Moll (swimming), Johanita Scholtz (badminton) and Team SA’s Mixed Medley relay team all welcomed gold medals!
Onward and upward for the rest of the African Games as South Africa continues to shine as bright as ever in Accra.
