A stray mommy cat who made Union High School her home has sparked a heartwarming community effort, with learners, staff and local animal lovers coming together to care for her, rehome her kittens and make sure there are healthier futures ahead for them all!

Graaff-Reinet, South Africa (19 August 2026) – Amid the morning rush, assemblies, class bells, busy teachers and afternoon sports at Union High School, a little feline family has quietly settled in and captured everyone’s hearts.

It all started with a stray mommy cat who decided that school life suited her rather well. Before long, there were kittens: tiny faces peeping out from hiding places and little paws darting around the grounds.

“They were incredibly cute to watch, but we also knew that allowing the cycle of litters to continue wasn’t responsible,” Union High shared.

So, the school community took it upon themselves to do the right thing. With the wonderful help of Greg Kappers and the Camdeboo Sterilisation Initiative, they managed to safely catch the resident mom, have her spayed and return her to the place she had chosen as home.

“She remains very much part of the Union campus, where there are plenty of people keeping a quiet eye on her.”

But the work wasn’t quite done yet, as mommy’s kittens also needed to be caught and spayed. Though it was a rather tricky task, the enthusiastic willingness of the learners made all the difference, resulting in the success of the great Union kitten hunt, with the very last little one caught safely this week.

What’s even more special is that the kittens from mommy cat’s last two litters have all been safely rehomed with animal-loving members of staff and friends of the school.

“Mom is back in familiar territory and being cared for, and there will be no more unexpected litters arriving on campus.”

To some, this may not be the biggest news to come out of a busy school, but for the animal lovers in the community, it feels like a rather lovely little victory. A stray found a home, many of her little ones did too, and they all have healthier futures ahead of them!

As the proud Union High community so perfectly put it:

“It’s a small thing in the greater scheme of school life, perhaps – but we’re rather proud of this one.”
