South African surfers are preparing to take on international rivals while representing the country at the 2026 World Waveski Surfing Titles.

South Africa (14 October 2026) – South Africa’s waveski surfers are preparing to test themselves against international competition when the World Waveski Surfing Titles take place in Huanchaco, Peru, from 20 to 29 October.

The South African Waveski Surfing Association (SAWSA) has announced the squad that will represent the country at the 2026 championships, where athletes from around the world will compete across their respective divisions.

The event is held every two years and brings together a global community of waveski surfers. Alongside the competition, it offers athletes an opportunity to reconnect with familiar faces, meet fellow surfers and build friendships with people who share their passion for the sport.

Team SA looks to use the championships as an opportunity to represent the country while putting their skills, preparation and sportsmanship to the test against some of the world’s best.

Waveski surfing combines elements of surfing and paddling, with athletes using a specialised seated craft to ride and manoeuvre across waves. Competitors need to read the conditions, choose their waves carefully and demonstrate control and technique in the water.

SAWSA has wished the squad well ahead of the trip, encouraging the athletes to compete with pride and make the most of the experience.

The championships will run for 10 days, from 20 to 29 October, with the South African team carrying the hopes of their local waveski community to the Peruvian coast.

The team includes:

  • Tracy Sassen
  • Courtney Schelhasе
  • Lily Mavronicolas
  • Ken Clements
  • Kevin Gaynor
  • Darren Bunker
  • Craig Bartlett
  • Francois Steyn
  • Mike Wessels
  • Jethro Keys
  • Jacque Smit
