Terminal cancer patient Maureen reached out to Paws R Us: SA in Midrand to ask for help in finding a loving home for her dogs Mandy and Monty.
Midrand, South Africa (15 February 2023) – Paws R Us: SA took on a very special case in August 2022. They were approached by retired nurse Maureen, who is currently in the late stages of terminal cancer. Her beautiful dogs are in good health and she hoped to find them a loving home before losing her battle with the disease.
Maureen hoped that her dogs Mandy and Monty would find a loving home together. She feared that should she lose her battle to cancer before a home is found, they would end up at a shelter. Paws R Us: SA quickly set up a day to meet the dogs and created a post in the hope of connecting the pups to a family prepared to take them in.
“MONTY is an extremely sensitive soul, with a heart as big as the ocean, and once he feels safe, he simply adores his human. MANDY is a little more confident and appears to be the leader of the duo. When separated for even a few minutes, these two search for each other immediately. They are about to face a big change in their lives – and we need a gentle, patient, savvy human family who will embrace them with love.”
By the time November 2022 arrived, they had not had any interest in Mandy and Monty. Maureen was feeling worried that she was running out of time to see them off safely but then a wonderful couple reached out to Paws R Us: SA.
“Out of nowhere, came Glenda and Berndt. They made contact, and asked if they could meet Maureen, Monty and Mandy. And if memory serves, the first visit was in November, and it went so well.
The humans connected, the humans and dogs connected, and we were grateful for the chance to weave a ‘catch-net’ for the 2 dogs -a continuous embrace of love and stability when the time arrived for goodbyes and change.
The dogs have been so comfortable with both Glenda and Berndt, and that has been a great relief. And Maureen draws enormous comfort from getting to know these 2 humans who will commit to taking her dogs in as family, when she crosses over.”
Glenda and Berndt then visited Maureen, Mandy and Monty two more times. They have invited Maureen to their home to see the garden where Mandy and Monty will be able to retire.
“The adoption paperwork is in, and the home-check has been approved.
No-one knows the timing of this adoption. It has been a testament to love from the get-go, a coming together of humans to offer blessings to a person who so deserves the support, who has given her whole life to caring for the sick and the frail, and whose turn it now is to be buoyed by care. And, last but not least, it is a testament to the love of dogs, and a uniquely beautiful commitment to Monty and Mandy.
What an honor and privilege to journey with Maureen, Monty, Mandy, Glenda, Berndt, Lily (their dog), and the cats.”
Maureen has found a peace in knowing that her beloved dogs will have a home when she goes. Glenda and Berndt have brought her a peace and have given Mandy and Monty the chance to better cope when the loss does come.
Our hearts (and eyes) are filled!
