What started as a simple idea between two friends has blossomed into a movement spreading warmth to those in need and a place of belonging for those looking to make a real difference.

Pretoria, South Africa (14 April 2026) – Back in March 2022, in Pretoria East, The Big Blanket Project began with a simple spark: two friends who wanted to make a difference in their community together by knitting and crocheting for those in need. The plan was simple: to meet weekly, swap patterns, and turn wool into warmth.

However, launching so soon after the pandemic evident that there were many lonely and isolated people who wanted to be part of something bigger, and pour their hearts into a project that truly gives back.

Fourteen people attended the first get-together, and the group has grown to over thirty people who meet at the PHSOB Club on Monday mornings.

Many new friendships have been forged on these special mornings between the volunteer members who buy wool using their own resources and donate the items they make.  The group is always keen to share their skills with other members, and to help each other with patterns, designs and new ideas.

To date, they have made over 1,000 blankets and beanies, as well as over 250 scarves. One volunteer has also donated over 2,000 crocheted squares, which volunteers have put together into blankets.

Partner organisations which benefit from these cosy items are the Tshwane Leadership Foundation, Charisma Partial Care, PEN Outreach, Manager Care Centre, Starfish Babies, Sungardens Hospice Outreach, and a Women’s Shelter in Pretoria West.

“We have also provided blankets to a number of families who have lost their homes through fires.”

But this incredible work –that spreads warmth where it is needed most– needs support to keep going.

“In 2025, through the good offices of Mr Gordon Hay, the Trinity Presbyterian Church donated funds for the purchase of wool. The availability of wool has made a huge difference to the number of blankets our group has been able to make,” shares The Big Blanket Project Coordinator, Carol Bunn.

“The greatest need for this project is wool, or funds to buy wool. Donated blankets are also welcome. We also receive donations of knitted squares and wool from anonymous donations via our collection boxes.”

The Big Blanket Project has collection boxes at Cash Converters Gift Acres, The Toy House in Menlo Park and the Hazelwood Food Market.

Members hope more people will be inspired to start their own group aimed at uplifting the community. The Project is a non-aligned, registered, non-profit organisation. Donations are recorded and acknowledged through the NPO.
