The sweetest thing is freedom.

Western Cape, South Africa (17 August 2026) – A handful of tiny indigenous creatures have been released back into the wild by the Cape of Good Hope SPCA.

A Cape golden mole, African helmeted turtle and baby terrapin were all returned to protected natural habitats after being rehabilitated in the SPCA’s care.

Unfortunately, in South Africa, and in many other parts of the world, wildlife is still often kept as pets. This is not only cruel, as indigenous wild animals belong in their natural habitats where they can live freely, but it also takes away from our local biodiversity.

When wildlife is injured, displaced or illegally kept, these animals are often confiscated by the SPCA or surrendered into its care.

Once at the SPCA, or another accredited wildlife rehabilitation centre, the goal is always to rehabilitate the animals and release them back into protected natural habitats.

The Cape of Good Hope SPCA has given us a glimpse of what these sweet returns to freedom look like. Working alongside CapeNature, the team recently released these little creatures back into the wild, where they belong. Have a look!
