People from around the globe have spent the year leaving massive tips for restaurant staff as part of a viral trend called the “2020 Tip Challenge”!
New York, United States of America (27 December 2020) – Tom Selleck recently made front-page headlines after leaving a $2,020 (R29,000) tip as part of a viral trend called the “2020 Tip Challenge”.
People from around the globe have spent the year leaving massive tips for restaurant staff as part of a kind initiative sparked off on New Year’s Day when Danielle Franzoni – a waitron at the Thunder Bay River Restaurant in Michigan – received a $2,020 tip on a $23 bill. The receipt also had a handwritten message reading “Happy New Year. 2020 Tip Challenge.”
According to CNN, Franzoni kept it going by leaving a $20.20 tip on a dinner bill later that week.
The challenge started to pick up momentum after Donnie Walhberg left a $2,020 tip for his server following a visit to IHOP and since then people from around the globe have been inspired to leave bigger tips to help struggling restaurant staff.
Selleck recently joined the viral trend when he left a $2,020 tip on a $204.68 bill for restaurant staff at Elios on the Upper East Side in New York City.
Wahlberg, who plays Selleck’s son on the TV drama “Blue Bloods” paid tribute to the act of kindness on Twitter.
I found out that my TV Dad #TomSelleck has generously accepted the #2020TipChallenge at Elios Upper East Side!
Love ya dad. ❤️
I didn’t start it but I’m proud to be part of it. To those who gave even the smallest extra amount this year — THANK YOU.#spreadloveandlovewillspread pic.twitter.com/1NcEswVbsO

It is incredible to see the number of people who have joined the initiative, but it doesn’t have to be a massive amount left as a tip; whatever you can afford to share kindness will make all the difference in another person’s life.
Check out the hashtag – #2020TipChallenge – on Twitter and Instagram to see all the acts of kindness.
