This is the first international hotel brand to be launched in Mozambique, so this initiative will be a huge boost for the destination (and great for South Africans too).

Ilha Caldeira, Mozambique (15 August 2021) – World-renowned luxury hotel brand Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts will soon grace the shores of Southern Africa with plans to open a new ultra-luxury resort in the second quarter of 2022. This Sanctuary for the Senses will be situated on the private island of Ilha Caldeira, 11km off the coast of mainland Mozambique. An absolutely idyllic tropical sanctuary soon to be the only certified, internationally branded 5-star resort in Mozambique.

Partnering with visionary Jack Truter – a South African modern-day Robinson Crusoe who the Mozambican government has given provisional rights to build an ultra-luxury resort on the island. Together they are bringing the successful Banyan Tree model of private pool villas on a tropical beach destination to Southern Africa. Currently, there are no other international hotelier brands in Mozambique, so this initiative will be a huge boost for the destination. Although Banyan Tree already has Tamouda Bay in Morocco, this will be their first flag in the southern part of the African continent.

This previously uninhabited island is located within the Primeiras and Segundas Archipelago, which happens to be Africa’s largest marine reserve as well as home to Mozambique’s intact living corals, green and hawksbill sea turtles. Keeping true to Banyan Tree Hotels & Resort’s commitment to the environment, the resort will be 100% solar-powered, and all water is desalinated on the island itself.

As always, Banyan Tree aims to bring authentic, memorable experiences providing a true appreciation of wherever one is in the world by connecting with people and their cultures to create unforgettable experiences. Banyan Tree Ilha Caldeira will be committed to this ethos of sustainability and connection, as is evident in their three pillars – environment, community, and responsibility. These pillars will ensure that the resort operates ethically, keeping in mind factors such as the biodiversity of the area, the needs of local cultures, and their leadership role in the region. As per the Banyan Tree brand pillars, guests can expect a locally infused experience that offers the most exceptional sanctuary-like setting.

Consisting of 40 private pool villas inspired by diverse local cultures and nature’s soothing colours. Each with uninterrupted views of the pristine Indian Ocean, allowing guests the rare opportunity to connect with unexplored lush tropical surroundings and white sandy beaches formed from sandstone. A truly idyllic island destination with magnificent sunrises and sunsets to stir one’s soul.

Activities will range from whale watching and kayaking to scuba diving and exploring islands within the Archipelago, to name just a few of the varied water sports in this world-class stunning location. Not forgetting exploration of a nearby shipwreck of the historical Dutch MS Brastagi (that sank in 1947).

Dining choices are set to be exquisite, and guests can choose between the 270º ocean view fish and seafood market restaurant, the all-day dining restaurant, and the in-villa or destination dining options. In true Banyan Tree style, there will be a focus on creating seasonal dishes that are regionally sourced and locally curated and a well-being menu. The lounge and cocktail bar will serve up classic drinks with a local twist while also offering tantalizing Petiscos tasters.

Banyan Tree Hotels & Resort’s goal of creating wellness-based destinations to rejuvenate the mind, body and soul will be met at Ilha Caldeira. Not only will there be a Banyan Tree Spa but also access to a beauty salon, a yoga pavilion as well as a fitness and wellness centre. As it is a family destination, the resort will offer a kids club too. Guests can also enjoy the Marine Conservation Centre, which includes a diving school.

Banyan Tree Ilha Caldeira will be the ideal island destination for honeymooners, multi-generational families, and everyone in between. With its unique setting and the high standards of everyone involved in the project, Banyan Tree Ilha Caldeira is set to become Southern Africa’s most sought-after beach resort.
