Some of the most breathtaking beaches in the world will soon be enjoyed by more people after Greece pushed for a wheelchair-friendly revamp for hundreds of its beaches.
Greece (09 May, 2023)—Despite their usual serene natures, beach days aren’t a carefree experience for everyone. Wheelchair users for one know that a trip to the beach can require a lot more planning than simply what time to go and how much sunblock to bring. But, pretty soon, some of the most sought-after beaches around the world will become symbols of accessibility as Greece rolls out a wheelchair-friendly beach movement!
In April, Greece’s tourism minister Vassilis Kikilias shared the country’s plans to make beaches more accessible for everyone, with almost 300 beaches set to see improvements.
“Equal access to the sea is an inalienable human right.”— Vassilis Kikilias per Greek Reporter.
Improvements part of the wheelchair-friendly beach rollout include washing various features of beaches with wheelchair-friendly elements, from ramps to bars and restrooms as well as the incredible free Seatrac chair service.
This system is a kind of epic technology that provides disabled beachgoers access to the sea by gently easing them right into the water via a special chair.
The chair allows people to go for a dip and bath in gentle waters—something many haven’t enjoyed in years or ever without assistance.
See How It Works!
As for the Greek project’s progress, 147 beaches have already had work done on them. And, avid travellers keen to live out the Greek Island dreams can find out which beaches are wheelchair friendly and accessible via this map.
Imagine a world where everyone can enjoy life’s simplest pleasures. We think the Greeks are definitely onto something and hopefully, South Africa will catch on sometime soon!
