Winston Fani leads Cape Town’s inclusive tourism movement, joining ‘Dinner in the Dark’ and sharing the vision behind Out of Sight Tours.

Cape Town, South Africa (02 July 2025) – As South Africa’s first blind tourist guide and the founder of Out of Sight Tours, Winston Fani is proving that vision has very little to do with eyesight, and everything to do with imagination, courage, and purpose.

At the heart of Cape Town Tourism’s Limitless Cape Town movement, Winston is not just guiding tourists; he’s leading a paradigm shift in how we think about travel, access, and ability.

That shift was felt powerfully at the Dinner in the Dark event recently held at the One&Only Cape Town. In partnership with the City of Cape Town, Nederburg Wines, and the Cape Town Society for the Blind, the event served more than a gourmet meal; it served perspective.

Guests, including Executive Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis and tourism partners, were invited into complete darkness. No menus, no table selfies, no ambient lighting. Just heightened senses, deep conversations, and a disarming invitation to step into a world experienced beyond sight.

“In that space, people stopped seeing difference,” says Winston. “They started feeling connection. And that’s what inclusive tourism should do, it should make everyone feel like they belong.”

Cape Town Tourism’s CEO, Enver Duminy, echoed that sentiment:

“Dinner in the Dark is about more than a meal. It’s a reminder that innovation, accessibility, and inclusion must be at the centre of everything we do if we want to create a city where everyone feels seen, heard and valued.”

For Winston, the moment was deeply personal. From walking the streets of the Cape as a blind entrepreneur to now being the face of a global tourism conversation, his journey is proof that inclusion isn’t charity, it’s a smart strategy.

Out of Sight Tours is not just a business. Winston crafts guided experiences that immerse tourists in the textures, tastes, and sounds of the city, reminding them that seeing isn’t the only way to know something deeply. His tours challenge assumptions while celebrating what makes Cape Town and its people unforgettable.

The Limitless Cape Town campaign has been a great success over the years, and the inclusion of the Cape Town Society for the Blind further affirms that access must be built with, not just for, communities.

James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, captured the essence of the evening:

“With Limitless Cape Town, we’re doing more than promoting a destination; we’re reimagining tourism itself — bold, barrier-free, and open to everyone.”

And as Winston Fani continues to lead with purpose, one thing is clear: there is so much more to travelling, it goes beyond the sites, but how it makes you feel in the process is important.
