We all miss hugging our parents and grandparents to watching Antony Cauvin hug his gran has us sobbing; he invented a cuddle curtain to hug her.
Stratford-upon-Avon, United Kingdom (18 May 2020) – Hugs, oh how we miss hugs! They really help melt away stress and fill you with love. But hugs are not good for us right now; they could cause the spread of the coronavirus to a loved one who may not be able to fight it. We never thought we would see the day that a hug could be bad for a loved one.
It has been hard not seeing family or being able to show them our usual kind of love. But it is because we love them, that we take on this burden alone.
One man desperately wanted to hug his grandma, so he came up with an innovation that has us in tears! World, meet the “cuddle curtain”. It is a simple innovation, but one that could help combat the loss of hugging.
Made from a thick shower curtain, Antony Cauvin added sleeves and strung it up in his grandma’s garden. He then had her put on shoulder-length gloves, and the pair embraced for the first time in months.
The act had grandma practically sprinting for a cuddle, and we could hear everyone’s voices catching. Sky News in the UK spoke to Antony to discuss his innovation and how it came about.
“Last weekend was when I decided to buy all the materials, and I planned it out myself,” explained Mr Cauvin to Sky News.
“Really it’s bizarre that you can buy a clear shower curtain, I don’t know why they sell them given you would think you would want privacy, however they do sell them, so I bought one.
“Then I bought some shoulder-length sleeves, which I could fix by putting the holes through the plastic, tape them up and then put your arms through and wrap your arms around somebody.”
Antony wanted to be 100% sure it was safe before risking a visit to his grandparents, so he and his wife tested it out. It was a success, and Antony quickly got it packed and ready for a visit to his grandparents.
“Before we took it to my grandparents’ house, I tested it with my wife, and it worked,”
“We giggled about it but thought, ‘this could actually work’, so we took it up to my grandparents and put it up in the garden while they were in the conservatory.”
Take a look at the moment his grandma got to go in for a protected cuddle. We are blubbering! Such a beautiful moment that we so often take for granted! We hope this pandemic serves as a reminder to never take our loved ones for granted ever again!
“I’ve always been very close to my grandparents. I see them as second parents,”
“Not being able to see them has been tough, tougher for them than it is for us even because Grannan is a very affectionate person. You feel you haven’t seen them because you haven’t had that cuddle.
“I’ve never invented anything… but hopefully if we find a vaccine for this horrible disease, it won’t have to last.”
