Your blood donation could save a life. The Western Cape Blood Service is calling on all of us to give red this October.

Western Cape, South Africa (01 October 2026) – Not all heroes wear capes; some stick out an arm and donate!

Patients across South Africa rely on donated blood to get through many different kinds of emergencies, operations and ongoing treatments. Blood can’t be made in a lab, so the only place it can come from is everyday people who choose to roll up a sleeve for strangers.

Across the Western Cape alone, around 700 units of blood are needed daily to keep up with the needs of patients. That is 700 reasons to show up, and one donation can help save up to three lives!

The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is encouraging South Africans to ‘Live Life, Give Red’ this October, and to see their own good health as something worth sharing.

“Your strength can save a life,” says Marike Carli, Public Relations Manager for WCBS. “Donating blood is one of the most meaningful ways to make a difference. Strength isn’t only about physical ability, it’s about courage, compassion and choosing to show up for someone you’ve never met. Every donation gives a patient another chance at life.”

Wondering if you can be one of those heroes? Whether you’re giving for the first time or the fiftieth, you should be able to donate if you:

  • Are between 16 and 75 years old
  • Weigh 50 kg or more
  • Are in good general health
  • Lead a safe sexual lifestyle

Whole blood isn’t the only way to give. WCBS also offers plasma donation, which is an alternative for donors who have recently travelled to a malaria area, or whose haemoglobin level is just slightly below the threshold for whole blood donation. With next week being Plasma Awareness Week, it’s an appropriate time to donate.

It only takes 30 minutes to give a life-changing gift. To find your closest blood donation clinic, visit the WCBS website here, or send a WhatsApp to 060 549 7244.
