Western Cape, South Africa – Watching the tragic fires in Australia is a stark reminder that our very own wildfire season is right around the corner. In South Africa, our wildfire season starts in the dry summer and runs throughout the windy season in the Western Cape.
The areas do have established fire departments, however, the need during peak season is so high that volunteer firefighting organisations run during the wildfire season. They rely on donations from the public and volunteers to combat fires.
During wildfires, firefighters get many donations in the form of water, sunblock and all the other essentials but leading up to it, the organisations need to save as much as possible to help their volunteers cover costs should the needs arise.
Some days, considering last season’s wildfires, volunteer firefighters can stay out on the frontline for 24-hours or more.
