There’s a very good boy on SA’s coastline, and he’s been behind some of the most impactful poaching and crime busts!
Gqeberha, South Africa (11 June 2026) – Zeus is a Belgian Malinois K9 service dog deployed by security provider Dark Water Ops, and alongside his handler Johan S. Zurnamer, he’s been doing some really impactful conservation work on our coast.
South Africa’s abalone poaching crisis has driven wild populations toward collapse. Organised criminal networks illegally strip this threatened marine species from our coastal reefs and funnel it to black markets. That has devastating consequences for the ocean ecosystem.
Since Daily Maverick first introduced the public to Zeus back in October last year, the team has continued to rack up an impressive record!
“Since then, Zeus and his handler, Johan S. Zurnamer, have continued to build an extraordinary operational record that demonstrates the value of dedicated K9 teams in conservation and law enforcement.” shares the security provider.
To date, Zeus has been directly responsible for recovering 226 bags of illegally harvested abalone, preventing millions of rands’ worth of marine resources from ever reaching criminal networks.
Zeus’s nose and tracking skills have also led to the arrest of multiple suspects, including six abalone poaching suspects caught in the field, and another four located after Zeus sniffed out abalone they’d hidden in bush areas.
He helped arrest seven housebreaking suspects, led to the recovery of more than ten diving cylinders, and detected over 63 divers and their shore-based assistants operating in restricted areas. One vehicle has also been impounded and confiscated as a result of his work.
“These figures represent countless hours of patrols, searches, tracking operations and intelligence-driven deployments. Behind every recovery and arrest is the dedication of a highly trained K9 team working in difficult and often dangerous environments”
That’s an impactful tally for any law enforcement team, let alone one where half the partnership runs on four legs.
“The partnership between Zeus and Johan S. Zurnamer serves as a powerful example of what commitment, training and teamwork can achieve. Their success highlights the critical role that K9 units play in conservation enforcement, anti-poaching operations and broader crime prevention efforts.”
Abalone poaching is one of South Africa’s most significant environmental crimes. Every bag recovered and every suspect arrested makes a difference to the long-term health of our marine ecosystems.
