When teamwork and a whole lot of elbow grease make the dream work! What seemed like an impossible task fitting 10 dog kennels into a small car became a relentless refusal to give up by members of the Purple Kennel Project and Zola’s Paw Rescue to get warm woofer homes to the animals who truly need them.
Cape Town, South Africa (07 September 2026) – The Purple Kennel Project is an animal welfare support initiative that works tirelessly to provide kennels to needy woofers. And when the team recently received a donation of kennels to give to Zola’s Paw Rescue in Kleinmond, they were more than excited to hand them over to the wonderful organisation, which shares their passion and love for animals in need.
According to the Purple Kennel Project, Micaela Davis, a volunteer from Zola’s Paw Rescue, had kindly offered to collect the 10 kennels on Saturday morning.
“During our communication, I had asked what kind of car she had, as although the kennels do stack wonderfully inside each other, they are quite big and cumbersome, especially when six of the 10 are jumbo size! ‘No worries,’ she said. ‘I have a Renault Sandero, which is pretty big, and there will be plenty of room with the seats down.’ I did not know this car, but she was full of confidence, so I did not worry,” explains Samantha Chatham, Founder of the Purple Kennel Project.
However, when Micaela arrived, Samantha’s chin nearly hit the floor in shocked dismay as she saw the rather small car drive in. From where she stood, she was already picturing what a mission it would be to squeeze the 10 kennels inside. What’s worse, Micaela then broke the news that the back boot door of the vehicle did not open either, meaning all the kennels had to go in through the side door!

“What then took place during the best part of the next hour is pretty indescribable. Imagine the most difficult game of Tetris, then times it by 10. We lost count of how many times we loaded some kennels, then took them out again to try another way,” recounts Samantha.
But after a huge effort, plenty of elbow grease, and a refusal to give up, perseverance finally paid off. All the kennels eventually fit inside the Sandero!
“We do not know how we did it, but in that small car, we got six jumbo kennels, two large ones, and two medium ones! Whether she will get them OUT again… remains to be seen.”
The Purple Kennel Project thanked Micaela not only for offering to collect the kennels, but also for not taking no for an answer. Where there is a will, there is usually always a way, and she found it!
The sponsors who provided the kennels were also thanked for their generosity, which has helped send warm woofer homes on their way to the needy dogs of Kleinmond.
