3-Night Public Hospital Stay

When Cindy took a little one in her care to a public hospital, she braced for the worst, only to be completely blown away by the kindness and exceptional care they received.

East London, South Africa (27 July 2026) – When Cindy Mauer found herself having to take one of the children in her care to a public hospital, she was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about what lay ahead.

Her apprehension was based on the negative reputation of state healthcare as well as early memories of helping her mother, who also cared for abandoned, abused, and neglected children, whenever a little one needed hospital care.

“I have very vivid memories of those hospital visits,” Cindy shared in a post, reflecting on how, back then, the facilities weren’t always the cleanest.

However, when Cindy walked into Frere Hospital in preparation for Keziah’s surgery, she had a completely different experience and felt compelled to share her experience.

Not only was the Orthopaedic Paediatric Ward clean and well cared for, but from the moment Cindy and her family arrived, they were treated with kindness, dignity, and respect.

“It has honestly been such a pleasant surprise and has put many of my fears to rest,” she said.

Cindy expressed her appreciation to doctors Van der Byl and Daniel, who provided exceptional care to Keziah and showcased a remarkable way of making her feel special, safe, and completely at ease.

“As a parent, that means more than words can express.”

The staff in the Orthopaedic Paediatric Clinic and the Orthopaedic Paediatric Ward were just as amazing. Every smile, every kind word, and every act of compassion made such a difference to their hospital stay, creating an environment where children and their families feel cared for, valued, and loved.

For Cindy, the three nights spent at Frere Hospital became an unexpected, healing and emotional journey. Walking through the corridors reminded her of the times she accompanied her mother at the very same hospital with abandoned, abused, and neglected babies and children she was caring for.

Happy and grateful to see how much has changed over the years, Cindy said:

“Those experiences shaped my expectations, but this week reminded me that change is possible and that there are so many dedicated people working tirelessly to provide excellent care.”

While she notes that no hospital is perfect and that some people have had difficult experiences, she felt compelled to share that not all hope is lost, and to thank those who are making a positive difference in the lives of the patients in their care.

As she best puts it:

“To every doctor, nurse, cleaner, therapist, porter, and member of the support staff who cared for us – thank you. Your dedication, professionalism, and compassion do not go unnoticed. You turned what I expected to be a frightening experience into one that brought peace, reassurance, and healing.”
