The latest outreach saw volunteers distribute blankets, scarves and toiletries while spending time with beneficiaries through Cross the Divide.

Johannesburg, South Africa (03 June 2026) – More than 130 blankets, along with scarves and toiletries, have found new homes after a heartwarming outreach initiative aimed at supporting people living on the streets.

Volunteers from the 67 Blankets movement recently partnered with Cross the Divide to distribute 136 blankets to vulnerable community members, creating a morning filled with warmth, dignity and meaningful human connection.

What made the handover particularly special was the opportunity for recipients to choose their own blankets. Rather than simply receiving an item, individuals were able to select colours and patterns that appealed to them, turning a practical donation into a more personal experience.

The initiative also gave blanket makers a chance to see the direct impact of their work, with some even meeting and being photographed alongside the people who received their handmade creations.

Founded in 2013 by Carolyn Steyn, 67 Blankets has grown into a nationwide movement that encourages South Africans to knit and crochet blankets for people in need. Over the years, the initiative has become known for bringing communities together through acts of kindness and service.

For this latest outreach, Cross the Divide played a key role in ensuring the donations reached those who needed them most. The organisation works to support people experiencing homelessness and other hardships, helping to ease some of the daily challenges they face.

As winter settles in across South Africa, initiatives like these continue to provide more than just physical warmth. They offer comfort, dignity and a reminder that communities are stronger when people come together to support one another.
