A transformative partnership between FoodForward SA and Bienvenu Shelter provides vital nourishment to over 900,000 vulnerable individuals!
Gauteng, South Africa (19 September 2023) – In the heart of Yeoville, Gauteng, a remarkable partnership between FoodForward SA (FFSA) and Bienvenu Shelter has been quietly transforming the lives of vulnerable individuals, especially women and children.
This collaboration has become a beacon of hope, providing healthy and nutritious meals to more than 900,000 people in need every year.
Bienvenu Shelter, managed and operated by the Scalabrinian Sisters for the past two decades, offers a haven for those who migrate to the area. Beyond providing shelter and clothing, this remarkable institution goes the extra mile. It offers access to healthcare, mental health support, legal assistance, guidance, and support, recognising the multifaceted needs of its residents. One of the shelter’s vital missions is to empower women through training workshops, English lessons to enhance communication skills, and opportunities to attend classes in sewing, baking, beauty, or cosmetology. These initiatives not only equip women with practical skills but also instil confidence and independence.
Many of the shelter’s residents stay for three months, while others face more extended stays due to life’s challenges. Nevertheless, Bienvenu Shelter strives to create a nurturing environment where women can acquire the tools they need to lead independent lives.
Even after residents leave the shelter and transition into the outside world, Bienvenu’s outreach program continues to support them with food parcels. These crucial parcels are made possible through a valuable partnership with FoodForward SA.
Cheryl Palframan, speaking on behalf of Bienvenu Shelter, shares her gratitude, saying, “The partnership with FFSA has been an absolute godsend. We rely on donations, and this partnership has allowed us to feed our shelter’s residents and their children. The quality of the food we receive is just incredible and appreciated by all.”
FoodForward SA’s mission is to source, collect, and store edible surplus food from various points in the supply chain, including farmers, manufacturers, and retailers. They then redistribute this food to a network of vetted beneficiary organisations across South Africa.
Through impactful partnerships like the one with Bienvenu Shelter, FFSA has been able to reach and nourish as many as 900,000 individuals who would otherwise struggle to access nutritious meals. This partnership exemplifies the remarkable impact that can be achieved when organisations join forces to combat hunger.
Andy du Plessis, the managing director of FFSA, emphasises the importance of such partnerships, stating, “Partnerships form the foundation of our operations. Together, we have the power to make a positive impact on the lives of those less fortunate and contribute to the creation of a South Africa without hunger.”
The collaboration between FoodForward SA and Bienvenu Shelter stands as a shining example of how unity and compassion can bring about profound change in the lives of vulnerable individuals. With every meal provided, they are nourishing not just bodies but also hope for a brighter future. Together, they are working towards a South Africa where no one goes to bed hungry, demonstrating that when hearts and hands come together, incredible things can be achieved.
