In a heartwarming display of community spirit, the youth of Hangberg stepped up to assist the City of Cape Town firefighters in putting out a fire. Initially observing the firefighters’ efforts, the youth eagerly helped with tasks like dragging hoses and dampening down hot spots.
Hangberg, South Africa (22 January 2025) – Last week, a great display of teamwork and community took place as the children of Hangberg rolled up their sleeves to gladly assist the City of Cape Town (CCT) firefighters in putting out a fire that broke out in the area.
As the Hangberg youth observed the firefighters battling the blaze, the firefighters seized the opportunity to engage with them, sharing firefighting techniques and their strategies. When the need arose to connect additional hoses, the youth eagerly stepped forward to assist.
Some of the youth gathered behind the firefighters and demanded they wanted to assist, helping to drag additional hosing across the mountainside as firefighters advanced.
Once the fire had been subdued, firefighters needed to dampen down on the area to prevent smouldering vegetation from reigniting, and the youngsters were given a smaller jet to dampen down the area.
CCT Councillor, Alderman JP Smith was moved by the youngsters’ camaraderie and proactive action, sharing that firefighters often face a lot of challenges while trying to undertake their duties, especially from opposing community members desperate to seize their belongings.
But in this community, the youth themselves were only too happy to assist!
“Firefighters are trained and have specific skills and qualifications. More than this, they are ‘friends’ and there to assist. Yesterday [Thursday, 16 January] that relationship was formed in the community of Hangberg, Houtbay,” a pleased Smith shared.
