Animal hero Nico Mahlohla and Sebastian braved freezing temps to deliver food, care, and cosy dog jerseys to a mountain pack ahead of Mandela Day, proving once again that kindness climbs.

Free State, South Africa (09 July 2025) – When the Cluny Animal Trust first heard about a pack of dogs and a single cat living atop a mountain with a cattle herder, they never imagined the story would spark such a wave of kindness. But thanks to Nico Mahlohla’s legendary climb last winter, 25kg of dog food on his back and purpose in his heart, a beautiful bond was formed. And now, the story continues.

This time, Nico wasn’t alone. He was joined by Sebastian, the son of Cluny’s Dr Elsa, and together the pair set off at 7am in -5ºC temperatures, hiking up the frosty slope with even more supplies in tow. Their mission? To check in on the animals, deliver another 25kg of food for the dogs, wet and dry food for the cat, a blanket for each, and for their devoted carer, Tshepang, who has been keeping watch over them all.

This was no ordinary supply drop, it was a winter wellness check wrapped in heart. Alongside the food and warmth, Nico and Sebastian brought snazzy new dog jerseys (eight in total!), plus deworming treatments and tick-and-flea medication. The verdict? All dogs and the cat are in good health, tails wagging, spirits high, and bodies warmer.

Tshepang, deeply touched by the gesture, was especially grateful for the thoughtful donations. Nico took the time to explain how to care for the dogs’ new winter wear, reminding Tshepang to remove the jerseys during the day and only put them on at night.

The effort was also made possible thanks to the generous support of Ian and the Kunduchi team, whose dog jerseys have brought colour, comfort and a touch of style to these mountain-dwelling companions.

“It’s a beautiful way to kick off Mandela Month,” the Cluny team shared. “We’ll be sharing more stories like this in the lead-up to Mandela Day on July 18th, because helping those who can’t help themselves, even with the smallest of gestures, is exactly what the day stands for.”

And if there’s one thing this mountain story has proven, it’s that kindness, much like Nico and Sebastian’s determination, climbs.
