Their voices moved millions, and now they’re being honoured as part of something even bigger… Mzansi Youth Choir’s AGT audition is officially one for the record books.

Global (18 July 2025) – South Africa, get ready to beam with pride… again.

Mzansi Youth Choir, one of the country’s brightest cultural gems, is about to make history (again) on a global stage. Their soul-stirring Golden Buzzer audition on America’s Got Talent (AGT) is set to feature in a major prime-time NBC television special, America’s Got Talent: Greatest Golden Buzzers, airing Tuesday, 22 July.

The heartfelt performance was so moving that, for the first time in the history of AGT, the Golden Buzzer was awarded by the audience.

Mzansi Youth Choir, known for its impeccable harmonies and vibrant energy, brought their unique sound to the AGT stage with an emotional twist. The decision to cover Nightbirde’s song was not a random choice. The choir was deeply inspired by Nightbirde’s story and her uplifting message of resilience in the face of adversity. They saw the opportunity to pay tribute to a fellow artist who had touched the world with her strength and courage.

From the moment their voices soared across that AGT stage in 2023, Mzansi Youth Choir captured the hearts of millions.

“Thank you for being such a memorable part of the AGT story,” producers shared with the choir.

Their performance drew tears, goosebumps, and standing ovations, on screen and off. Since then, the group has been on a meteoric rise that shows no signs of slowing down.

Their journey reads like a dream:

  • Over 28 million combined views across YouTube and Facebook from their AGT audition alone.
  • Finalists in Season 18, joining the ranks of international stars.
  • Performances with Coldplay, including live stadium shows in San Diego and the iconic Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
  • Recording sessions in Malibu, with two tracks featured on Coldplay’s 2024 album Moon Music.
  • Collaborations with icons like Beyoncé, Andrea Bocelli, Shakira, Josh Groban and Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse.
  • Standing ovations in the UK, a closing act at Global Citizen with Beyoncé, and a win at the Interkultur World Choir Games Virtual Competition.

Founded in 2003, the choir is a musical powerhouse. It’s a safe haven and a launchpad for young South Africans aged 13 to 26, many from underprivileged backgrounds. Through rhythm, harmony and heartfelt performance, the choir empowers its members to grow academically, personally and professionally.

“Our music is a fusion of everything we are, traditional, modern, joyful, soulful,” says Artistic Director and choreographer Alfred Phakathi. “It’s not just about performance. It’s about purpose.”

And that purpose shows. With global tours across Canada, the USA, UK, Denmark, Turkey, Egypt, Tanzania and Russia, the choir has grown from a local initiative to a global phenomenon. Their accolades stretch from award-winning documentaries to sold-out arenas.

What makes this group so special isn’t just their pitch-perfect harmony or energetic choreography, it’s their unwavering message of hope, unity and the power of dreams. Every note they sing carries a story. Every performance lifts hearts.

“You defined what this show absolutely is all about,” said Simon Cowell after their AGT audition.

And he wasn’t wrong.

Whether it’s singing at the Royal Albert Hall or raising goosebumps with a Coldplay collaboration, Mzansi Youth Choir is making music, creating magic, inspiring generations and putting South Africa on stages that span the globe.

Their story is far from over. And the next chapter begins on 22 July. Tune in, watch with pride, and let their voices remind you what South African excellence sounds like.
