Lifesaving South Africa honoured World Drowning Prevention Day, bringing together over 100 learners to educate them on water safety.

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (28 July 2025) – Every year on 25 July, the world observes World Drowning Prevention Day, a reminder that drowning is silent, fast, and preventable. This year, 100 learners from KwaMashu and surrounding schools in KwaZulu-Natal gathered at the Rachel Finlayson Pool in Durban to mark the day with learning.

The event was not only about awareness but also about honouring lives lost to drowning. In a quiet and moving moment, a candle was lit to remember those no longer with us. Lifeguards also took the official Lifeguard Pledge, showing their commitment to protecting lives in the water.

Throughout the day, the children were taken through life-saving demonstrations and activities led by KZN Lifesaving, Metro Police Search and Rescue, ALS Paramedics, and other partners. From learning how to perform CPR to watching beach rescue simulations, learners had the opportunity to understand the dangers of water and how to stay safe.

One of the highlights of the day was meeting Resci, the popular lifesaving mascot, who helped keep the learners engaged while passing on important safety tips in a fun and memorable way.

The event carried a strong message that drowning can be prevented. With the right education, support, and action, lives can be saved. Whether it is teaching children how to swim, raising awareness in communities, or ensuring beaches and pools are supervised, prevention begins with us all.

The theme of the day was “Together, we remembered. Together, we learned. Together, we committed to prevention.” A reminder that drowning prevention is a shared responsibility. Through collaborations, awareness and care for one another, we can build safer environments for all.

As we honour World Drowning Prevention Day 2025, let us keep the conversation going by teaching, learn, and act, because every life matters.
