Rory Petzer is calling South Africans to the iconic Loftus Versfeld with one goal: breaking the world record for the biggest braai.
Pretoria, South Africa (11 August 2025) – Can you believe South Africa does not hold the record for the world’s biggest braai?
Believe it or not, that title currently belongs to Japan. Hard to believe, right? A country known for sushi and sumo wrestling somehow holds the record for the biggest braai in the world.
For many South Africans, that just does not sit right. And one man, Rory Petzer, has decided it’s time we do something about it.
He is calling all South Africans to come together this Heritage Day, 24 September, and reclaim our rightful place on the braai throne.
Here’s the plan: hold a massive braai at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, where 2,500 people will gather to set a new world record for the most people braaiing at the same time. The current record stands at 2,200, but South Africans never want to settle for second best when it comes to braaiing.
Rory’s message is clear: if anyone should be holding this record, it’s South Africa. After all, braaiing is more than just a way to cook, but a cultural cornerstone and a weekend ritual (especially when the Springboks are playing). And what better day to celebrate it than Heritage Day?
This record-breaking attempt is not just about the numbers. It’s about unity, pride, and putting South Africa back at the heart of the global braai conversation.
So, mark the date and get ready to make history.
