Two incredible Durban-based charities united to restore hope to a man whose home was tragically swept away by heavy rains. Working together, they provided him and his family with everything necessary to rebuild their lives, offering a fresh start during a challenging time.

Durban, South Africa (17 August 2025) – Devastated by the damaging effects of heavy rains, a local man was left in total despair as he watched the place he called home and everything he’d worked so hard to attain, wash away in ruins.

Grappling with the heartache and debilitating confusion of where to start in recovering all he had lost, he turned to Mission Thando Khabazela Soup Kitchen for refuge.

The organisation reached out to its fellow charity partner, The Angel Network Durban, setting in motion the answer to this poor man’s desperate prayers.

The home’s rood had caved in, resulting in flooding and the damage of most of the household belongings.

“Thanks to the generosity of The Angel Network Durban, we were able to start by fixing his roof, ensuring he had a safe and dry place to call home,” Mission Thando said.

But they didn’t stop there. Working together, the charities bought everything the man and his family needed to rebuild their life.

“From a comfortable bed to warm linen, a broom to sweep away the past, a basket to store his belongings, a chair to rest on, and a wardrobe to store his clothes. We made sure he had everything he needed to start anew. It was a moment we’ll never forget!”

The man was overcome with gratitude and emotion when he witnessed and experienced the generosity of kind strangers.

“He was overjoyed, and his eyes sparkled with gratitude. We’re grateful to partner with The Angel Network Durban, who selflessly donated to make this possible.

“Your kindness [The Angel Network Durban] is a beacon of hope to those in need, and we’re honoured to work alongside you,” Mission Thando said.

What these two organisations did for the man and his loved ones brought relief and restored so much more than just his physical possessions.

Now, he can sleep soundly in his restored home and know that he experienced the true spirit of Ubuntu because there were people who cared about his plight and did everything they could to help him in his hour of need.
