One Husky Lost to Snakebite But Support Can Save the Rest

Husky Heaven Rescue urgently needs support to secure fencing that will protect its 92 rescue pups against the mounting presence of snakes in the area.

Centurion, South Africa (22 April 2026) – Earlier this month, the team at Husky Heaven Rescue took to Facebook with an urgent plea, after a heartbreaking loss.

The night before their call for help, a puff adder had entered one of the facility’s rescue enclosures. As many will know, puff adders are considered highly dangerous and are responsible for the most snakebite fatalities in Africa.

Sadly, one rescue pup had succumbed to a snakebite.

“One of our beloved rescues was lost overnight, defending itself against a puff adder that had entered the enclosure. Both the snake and our rescue were found by our team during their morning rounds.”

The sad loss highlighted an urgent need for better protection against snakes for the 92-plus dogs in care at the rescue centre.

“It is nature and this is out of our hands, but we have taken extra precautions,” shared the team. “We have consulted with professional snake catchers, who have recommended the installation of smaller block fencing to prevent snakes from accessing our rescues. This measure is crucial, particularly during breeding season when snakes are most active.”

To keep all rescues safe in their enclosures, the team will need to purchase seven rolls of fencing at a cost of up to R30,000, an expense the organisation cannot carry on its own.

The call for donations was put out on Facebook as Husky Heaven grappled with the increased presence of snakes in the area.

“Unfortunately, a puff adder was discovered near the 4th enclosure on the left this morning, highlighting the further need for immediate action.”

Two weeks on, a few thousand rand has been raised. Husky Heaven has managed to purchase one roll of fencing but still requires seven more, along with fasteners, to properly secure all enclosures.

The generosity of supporters has been received in gratitude, but more help is still needed. Support that could save a husky’s life.

“Any contribution, no matter how small, will help us secure the safety of our rescues. Please consider donating to assist with this urgent matter.”
