Picture the glee of a little face seeing a lion for the first time. Now imagine 200 of them! A large group of Limpopo learners got their first glimpse of wildlife on a special safari, sparking curiosity and planting the seeds of conservation.
Limpopo, South Africa (18 August 2925) – There are some magical experiences that stay with us forever. For 200 Spa Park Primary School learners, many of whom had never seen wildlife up close before, their first-ever safari was more than just a day out; it was a life-changing introduction to the wonders of the wild!
What began as a request to host 100 learners between Grades 4-7 at the Mabula Game Lodge quickly doubled in size as word spread throughout the school. Determined not to disappoint a single child, a plan was curated to welcome each and every one of them.
The task of hosting fell to the Mabula Youth – a vibrant team of lodge employees under the age of 35 from various departments, organised into “Big Five” teams, each with their own captains and vice-captains.

The programme was designed to be as immersive as it was educational. With bright-eyed faces, learners enjoyed a guided safari with expert field guides, spotting lions, elephants, and other iconic species. The group was also engaged in a fascinating talk on the endangered Southern Ground Hornbill and learned about the dedication behind wildlife protection.
Mr Adams, Principal of Spa Park Primary School, summed up the day’s impact, sharing:
“This initiative was not just about giving the children a day of adventure. It was about inspiring the next generation to appreciate and protect our natural heritage, while strengthening our connection with Mabula Game Lodge. This was undoubtedly a day they will never forget.”
By the day’s end, the laughter, wide-eyed wonder, and heartfelt goodbyes made it clear – this was more than a field trip. It was an investment in the future, sparking an appreciation for conservation, tourism, and the opportunities that lie within their own communities.
It’s moments like these that show how tourism, when rooted in community, can change lives and shape futures.
