Angela Yeung braved the 8,849-meter Mount Everest summit to champion a bold cause: collecting a bra for every meter climbed. With over 6,700 already gathered, she’s now calling on all South Africans to help complete the final push and “summit this mountain of change” for survivors of gender-based violence.
Johannesburg, South Africa (19 August 2025) – As South Africa celebrates Women’s Month 2025, the Impilo Collection Foundation is calling on citizens, corporates, and communities to help close the gap of their symbolic goal of collecting 8,849 bras. One for every metre of Mount Everest climbed in the bitter cold by the founder, Angela Yeung.
Short of just 2,100 bras, this bold campaign, led by the adventurer and South African ambassador, continues to shine a light on the fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
Angela, one of the few South African women to conquer Everest’s North Side, dedicated her climb in May to the millions affected by GBV, proving that survivors can rise, heal, and reclaim their strength.
“Climbing Everest was about showing that survivors of violence can rise, heal, and reclaim their power,” said Yeung.
“Now, during Women’s Month, we ask South Africans to help us reach the summit of this mission: 8,849 bras for dignity, awareness, and solidarity.”

The campaign has already collected over 6,700 bras and needs one last push to bring hope and support to those who really need it. Collected across nine provinces, the bras will become part of ‘EmpowerHer: Bras for Humanity’, a powerful travelling art exhibition launching during 16 Days of Activism 2025.
This moving display, featuring bras as symbols of oppression, liberation, and resilience, will tour public spaces, corporate atriums, and civic venues before being donated to shelters and underserved communities.
“We are not just collecting bras. We are collecting voices, stories, and strength. Together, let’s summit this mountain of change,” shares Angela.

Angela’s journey also extended beyond Everest. After summiting, she trekked deep into the Himalayas to deliver over 100kg of clothing, shoes and school supplies to remote children at Rolwaling Monastery and Mountain Children Home, reinforcing the Impilo Collection Foundation’s mission: to uplift 1 million lives by 2035.
To support her cause, you can donate your gently used or new bras at the drop-off points listed on the Impilo Collection Foundation website. Alternatively, you can contribute R25 to sponsor a new bra for a woman in need here.
